Adagio Health addresses sharp rise of sexually transmitted infections in western PA

New technology allows for much faster testing & treatment

Pittsburgh, PA (March 6, 2023) – 1 in 5 people in the United States have a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI aka STD), according to the CDC. That’s about 68 million infections, and nearly half of new infections occur among young adults ages 15-24. One significant impact the COVID-19 pandemic had was keeping patients from routine testing. Some experts say that’s one of the reasons they are seeing “shocking” numbers in STI infections – including a 184% increase of congenital syphilis in the U.S. between 2017 and 2021.

Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are among the most common STIs. Infections are primarily spread through unprotected sexual contact, but some can also be spread through pregnancy and childbirth, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).  STIs are often “silent” infections, and may have no symptoms initially -- but if left untreated – can lead to serious health issues like infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), certain cancers, and increased risk of contracting HIV.

Although the rise of STIs and associated health risks are alarming, most STIs are preventable and treatable. Adagio Health offers judgment-free STI testing for both men and women, and now has made that process even faster and easier with technology created by Binx Health.  Right now, Adagio Health is utilizing Binx technology in its Uniontown and Seneca Medical offices.

"Adagio Health is one of very few providers offering rapid point of care testing of this type for sensitive infectious disease in our region,” said Vice President of Clinical Operations Natalie Miller. “Reducing wait time and treating patients same visit, same day is a relief to them and reduces further potential transmission. It is remarkable technology. Get tested with results in 30 minutes."

Adagio Health is the only medical organization with Binx technology within a 100-mile radius of both medical offices. The technology is said to increase treatment compliance, ensuring patients get the right treatment, and limits onward transmission, according to the binx website. The technology also provides patients peace of mind, empowering them to make the right decisions about their sexual health.

The Adagio Health Uniontown and Seneca medical offices offer same-day appointments, and walk-ins are welcome. Adagio Health accepts most insurances and Medicaid, with many services, including STI testing, at low or no cost to patients with no insurance.
