The First Gynecological Visit

If you've never been to a healthcare clinic before, you might not know
what to expect. Adagio Health's health care staff are caring professionals
who want to make you feel comfortable. The care you receive at Adagio
Health is confidential and individualized.
At your first family planning visit, a Adagio Health counselor will
explain the health care services available and what will be involved
during your initial visit. She will ask for information about your medical
history and explain any laboratory tests that will be done.
Next, she will talk to you about abstinence and safer sex. She will explain the different methods of contraception (birth control), including how each method is used, how it prevents pregnancy, how well it works, and what side effects might occur. The counselor will help you to select a birth control method that suits your needs and provide you with any supplies you need.
After that, a physician or nurse practitioner will do your medical examination. Your exam will include:
- a review of your health history
- a check of your heart, lungs, thyroid, and abdomen
- a breast exam
- instruction about breast self-examination
- a pelvic exam
- a PAP test (a screening test for cervical cancer)
In addition to family planning, other health care services are available, including pregnancy testing and counseling, emergency contraception, adoption services, prenatal care, testing and treatment for STDs, HIV testing and counseling, Hepatitis B immunization, infertility screening and counseling, and referrals for additional services.
Ongoing routine visits will be scheduled according to your needs and the method of birth control you have chosen. To ensure your continued good health, you should have a gynecological exam every year if you are sexually active or 18 years old or older.
