Information for Teens
Is there an office close to me?
Adagio Health and its partners provide health care at more than
70 sites in 23 counties of western Pennsylvania. For the office nearest
you, see our locations page.
What are the hours?
Hours vary by location, so call your local office to find out.
How much does it cost for an exam? For STD testing? For a pregnancy test? For birth control?
Adagio Health is committed to providing confidential, high-quality,
low-cost health care. Adagio Health's health care services are FREE
for teens under 18. For those 18 and over, Adagio Health's fees are
based on a sliding fee scale. In other words, if you're an adult without
insurance, the cost will depend on what you are able to pay. Adagio
Health also accepts most insurance plans. If you have questions, please
ask us when you call to make your appointment.
Will you tell my parents?
While Adagio Health encourages you to talk to your parents about
your health care decisions, we provide confidential services to everyone.
This means we don't tell your parents. The only person we talk to about
your health care is you. If you have any concerns about your
privacy, please ask us when you call to make your appointment.
How do I know if I have a sexually transmitted disease (STD)?
The truth is, you can't know for sure you don't have an STD unless
you are tested. You can have an STD and not have any symptoms. For more
information about STDs, please check out our STD
page or contact the Adagio Health office nearest you.
What will happen at my first gynecological exam?
Most people are nervous about their first exam. If you have any concerns, you should talk with your health care provider before the exam. Explain your feelings and make sure any questions are answered. Some of the things that will happen during your exam include: a medical history (some questions about your health), a urine test, a breast exam, instructions on how to examine your breasts, a pelvic exam, and a Pap test to check for cancer. Your healthcare provider will also discuss STDs and birth control options. For more information, check out our gynecological visit page.
What kinds of birth control are available at Adagio Health?
There are a variety of methods available. Condoms, Depo-Provera (the shot, Depo), patches, and pills. For more information, check out our birth control methods page. Abstinence is always the most effective method of birth control.
Do guys need to get reproductive health exams, too?
It is a good idea for males who are sexually active to be screened for STDs. They can also receive information about condom use and learn how to perform a testicular self-exam.
What is emergency contraception (the "morning-after pill")?
Emergency contraception pills are like the birth control pill. They
are taken after sex when a regular method of birth control was not used
or if the method failed (condom broke). If taken correctly, it is 75-80%
effective in preventing pregnancy. To find out more, see the emergency
contraception page. If you need to obtain it, contact your local Adagio Health office or the National Emergency Contraception
Hotline (1-888-NOT-2-LATE).
What if I think I might be pregnant?
If you've had unprotected sex in the past few days, you might want
to use emergency contraception. To find out more about it, see the emergency
contraception page or call your
local Adagio Health office or the National Emergency Contraception
Hotline (1-888-NOT-2-LATE).
If it's been more than a few days, or if you've missed a period, call Adagio Health to arrange a pregnancy
test. Most Adagio Health offices offer them on a walk-in basis without
an appointment. Don't put off getting the test - the longer you wait,
the harder it can be to deal with the results. Although you may want
to use a home pregnancy test, at Adagio Health you can be sure the test
will be done correctly, and you'll be able to talk to a health care
provider who can help you understand the results and give you information on all your options.
Even if your test is negative, now is the time to start thinking about your birth control options. Contact your local office to schedule an appointment.
